How do you tell the story of an artist whose life was scattered across a continent? That's the question Van Gogh Europe set out to answer. Together with the foundation, a network of museums and heritage sites tied to Vincent van Gogh, we built an audio route app that follows his life and work across seven European locations, telling his story on the exact spots where he lived and painted.
What we provided
Vincent van Gogh was an artist who saw many places. From Brabant and Drenthe to London, Arles, and Auvers-sur-Oise, his life and work moved across Europe, and his story is scattered across the continent along with it. Van Gogh Europe wanted to bring that story back together, on the exact places where it happened, so people could discover his heritage not in a single museum but out in the world he actually painted.
At each location, the app opens up a story, carried by music and historical images. It's a listening experience that unfolds while you walk through the places where Vincent lived and worked, so the streets and landscapes around you become part of the story you're hearing.

Vincent left behind hundreds of letters, most of them written to his brother Theo. Those letters are the foundation of the guide. Instead of explaining the work from the outside, the story is told as if Vincent is speaking to you himself. You don't hear a museum describing the paintings. You hear the man who made them.

At every stop, visitors can discover the works Vincent created there, in high resolution, in the places where he lived and the world he saw. Seeing a painting where it was painted changes how you read it. You start to see the place the way he did.

The guide also includes a partner map showing all the museums and heritage sites in the Van Gogh Europe network. In a single view, visitors see which places they can visit along the way, from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and Van Gogh House in London. The route doesn't end with the app, it points people on to the real places.
